Lime essential oil use is similar to that of lemon, but with its own uniqueness. Lime essential oil benefits were realized long ago with traveling sailors in preventing scurvy. Today, Lime essential oil has a long list of other benefits and properties. Lemon and lime essential oils are often used interchangeably. This great essential oil is obtained either by expressing the lime peel or from the steam-distillation of the whole fruit. Lime is also one of the lesser expensive essential oils.
Lime essential oil use and properties of this natural and refreshing scent include acting as an appetite and digestive stimulant and helping to treat dyspepsia. It is also anti-septic, anti-viral and anti-bacterial.
For colds and flu, this oil can fight the virus, reduce the fever and target chest and throat infections, while strengthening the immune system.
Because of its astringent-like properties, Lime essential oil benefits can help skin conditions such as an oily complexion, acne, boils, and warts. Unfortunately, lime and other citrus-based essential oils increase your photo-sensitivity to sunlight. This means that some superficial damage could occur if you were to use this on your skin and go outside. It can cause darker and/or lighter spots on skin.
Mentally, lime has a restorative and tonic effect on the whole person. As well, it is noted for having anti-rheumatic properties and increase metal alertness and assertiveness.
Here is a great Stay Alert essential oil blend:
that you could place in a diffuser, of even in a simmering pot of water:
- In 1/2 cup of water, add (or less in a diffuser)
- 4 drops of lime
- 2 drops of black pepper
- 2 drops of peppermint
- let the aroma into the air to obtain its benefits.
When making soap, lime essential oil, as well as lemon and grapefruit, have a low staying power as a scent. Lemon and lime drops to half scent, and grapefruit can almost disappear. In order to keep this scent noticeable, you can add either the essential oils of Litsea Cubeba or Lemongrass (which is what we usually used). It is because of this low staying power that I come across soap makers that use fragrance oils in place of the natural essential oils (and still call their soap natural – BAD!). Lime oil is a happy smell, it reminds people of key lime pie and tropical drinks, and even the color is considered happy.
This awesome soap recipe used lime essential oil as one of it’s ingredients, the Lime and Cola, or Cuba Libre!
