Our one tropical soap, Life’s a Beach, was so popular we decided to make another tropical scented soap. We researched and created, and decided to make lime and cola soap, aka cuba libre, plus adding the scent of jasmine, a tropical flower. This odd scent combination was perfect. When we first made this soap, it was called Mambo #5, then customers would smell it and say it smelled like a cuba libre drink. So we changed the name.
Tropical scented bars will bring out the creative soap artist in you. Selecting various scents to create a whole new scent blend – your unique recipe. Then choosing the right colors to match that scent. Any tropical sounding bar sounds like a fun bar, so perhaps the more color the better. This soap sold well as long as the scent lasted, basically the cola and lime would fade after a couple months.
make lime and cola soap, aka cuba libre
- Basic #2 recipe: you can select a different base here)
51.2 oz Olive oil or an Olive/Canola blend
6.2 oz coconut oil
6.2 oz Palm oil
23.4 oz water
8.6 oz lye crystals
for this scented bar, add:
1 1/2 T of jasmine fragrance oils
2 1/4 T of cola fragrance oil
- 4 T of lime essential oil
- 1 1/2 tsp of litsea cubeba essential oil
- colorant: (I used the following, but get more creative than I did)
- 1 1/2 tsp liquid green colorant for the base color
- 1/4 tsp pink for a swirl
The following multli-layered bar looks absolutely beautiful! I suspect this is melt and pour soap, as cold process doesn’t usually have such fine lines between colors, but give it a try anyways, then sprinkle the top with little bits of dark pink soap bits.
Another version of representing the various scents is this soprano bar. The green base for the lime scent, and the browny-orange for the cola, and the orange and yellow for the jasmine flowers. A very pretty bar, and cold process too.

Real jasmine essential oil is very expensive, you can buy a 7.5% solution, where 1 ounce costs $45. But with it’s wonderful and healthy uses, it might be worth it, more here.
